Charles the Crane

Charles was inspired by a trip to the Somerset Levels.  Cranes are iconic and elusive birds and although I didn't spot one I could hear the deep 'chirr - rupp' resonating over the landscape.

Cranes are huge but yet very graceful with their long legs, long neck and drooping, curved tail feathers.  Their tail feathers seem very grand and almost regal looking.  I wanted to depict their beauty in this painting along with the wild flowers and grasses of their natural habitat.

The elegant colours of Charles and the lighter feathers stand out from the glorious gold backdrop.  Gold leaf sparkles in bright light and glows in lower light, oozing luxury and elegance.  This painting is enchanting and enriches any large space!
