Monty the Mandarin
Monty was inspired by an unforgettable sighting one winter’s day on the river beside my home. Amongst the familiar mallard ducks was the most extraordinary flash of colour — a magnificent Mandarin duck, his vibrant plumage standing out beautifully against the muted tones of winter.
I was captivated by his rich, jewel-like colours and wonderfully distinctive markings. I wanted to capture the beauty and character of this remarkable bird, bringing his vibrant personality to life against a glorious golden backdrop.
Mandarin ducks have long been treasured as symbols of love, devotion and fidelity, representing harmony and lasting relationships. This beautiful symbolism adds another layer of meaning to the artwork.
The rich oranges and deep blues contrast beautifully with the radiant gold leaf, which catches and reflects the changing light throughout the day, bringing warmth and luminosity to the painting.
