BEHIND THIS ARTWORK
Laila the Lapwing
Laila was inspired by a memorable walk across the beautiful Somerset Levels, where I spotted an elegant lapwing moving gracefully through the landscape.
There is something truly enchanting about these distinctive birds, with their delicate, sweeping crests and striking plumage. From a distance, lapwings can appear simply black and white, but up close their feathers reveal the most wonderful iridescent shades of green and purple. It’s one of nature’s beautiful little surprises.
I wanted to capture that unexpected beauty in Laila, bringing her rich blues, shimmering greens and delicate purples to life against a glorious gold leaf backdrop. As the light changes throughout the day, the gold catches and reflects it, adding warmth, depth and luminosity to the painting.
Laila is a celebration of nature’s hidden treasures and those wonderful moments of discovery, created to bring a sense of beauty, joy and quiet wonder into your home.
